What is Auxiliary?


Auxiliary verb, also known as helping verbs, add grammatical or functional meaning to the clauses or sentences in which they are used. Its main function is to add meaning to the basic meaning of the main verb in a clause or sentence. An auxiliary verb can convey information about person, number, tense and mood. Auxiliaries are also used with a main verb in the form of an infinitive or a participle.


There are 24 ‘Auxiliary Verb’ in English grammar. Some are called auxiliary verb and some are modal auxiliary verbs. Auxiliaries are the central part of sentences around which the subjects, objects and complements revolve.
